Description
Bird’s Eye Chilli (Capsicum annuum ‘Bird’s Eye’ or Capsicum frutescens), often called Piri Piri in some regions, is a small yet remarkably potent chilli pepper widely popular in South Africa and across the globe. Despite its diminutive size, these vibrant red or green chillies pack a fiery punch, typically ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 Scoville Heat Units. They are primarily used to add intense heat and a sharp, fruity flavour to dishes. Bird’s Eye chillies are a staple in many Asian, African, and Portuguese cuisines, excellent when chopped fresh into stir-fries, curries, sauces, marinades, and vinegars. They can also be dried and ground into flakes or powder, providing a concentrated burst of spice, and are often grown for their ornamental appeal in pots.
